In The Don’s world, when information and evidence is presented that displeases him, he is like the toddler who places his hands over his ears to block out what he doesn’t want to hear from his parents and screams:
“I am not listening! I can’t hear you.”
One of The Don’s greatest talents is his ability to create noise to distract us from the truth. As soon as he feels he is being exposed or something negative is being said, he decries “fake news” and immediately disparages the entity that has made these heinous accusations, be it the media or an individual. Substitute “fake news” for “I can’t hear you” and what you get is a president who acts like a four year old on a daily basis.
Now we have learned from a great piece of investigative journalism by The Washington Post, that The Don is unwilling and literally incapable of hearing anything negative about Russia during his daily intelligence briefings-that the “bad” Russia stuff only appears in a written report. And since we know he doesn’t read (except when forced to on a monitor) he is ignorant about all things Russia.
DESPITE THE FACT THAT EVERY INTELLIGENCE AGENCY FOUND EVIDENCE THAT RUSSIA INTERFERED IN OUR ELECTION, THE PRESIDENT REFUSES TO BELIEVE IT!
According to the Washington Post, whenever the C.I.A. tries to inform him about anything negative about Russia, he becomes emotionally destabilized and refuses to listen.
In other words, he puts his hands over his ears and yells:
“I AM NOT LISTENING! I CAN’T HEAR YOU! I CAN’T HEAR YOU.”
In order to bring the volume down, his staff plays the recording of his phone conversation with Putin, in which Putin butters him up with by telling him what a great job he has done with the economy. As Putin’s mellifluous words settle in, The Donian frown turns to a smile and he slowly removes his hands from his ears and says to McMaster: Play it again H.R., play it again.
So after 11 months in office, we have a man running our country that doesn’t listen to his own C.I.A’s evidence but hears Putin’s praises as a lullaby. As a result he has not convened one cabinet meeting to discuss how to deal with Russia’s influence on our elections.
At this point, the number of Russians who have interacted with The Don and his people could create an Olympic team-but oh yeah; Russia has been expelled from this Olympics because of cheating. Of course, there attempt to influence the outcome of the election, oops, I mean Olympics, is a bunch of malarkey, just some “fake news.”
At what point do Republican legislators wake-up and stop putting their hands over their ears and face the music. How do they sit by and defend a president who doesn’t listen to essential national security intel regarding Russia? How do they deal with their cognitive dissonance- that many accept the findings of the intelligence community that Russia interfered in our elections- but the president doesn’t?
Mueller’s investigation will have the final say on whether The Don colluded with the Russians, but Republican law- makers, by pretending not to see and hear the evidence of The Don’s unwillingness to accept anything negative about Russia, are complicit and colluding with The Don; this deafness puts our elections and national security at risk. In the world of The Don and his Republican sycophants, truth and evidence no longer matter.
And on cue, the right wing media, to The Don’s delight, has reared its ugly head and ramped up its noise machine to create a malevolent alternative reality that claims that the F.B.I. and Robert Mueller are corrupt and even part of a deep state plot to create a coup of the president. Attempts to sully the reputation of Andrew McCabe, Deputy Director of the F.B.I., have intensified. McCabe just happens to be one of the individuals at the F.B.I. that James Comey spoke to about his disturbing interactions with The Don. McCabe bears witness and corroborates Comey’s testimony, so the right wing noise machine needs to discredit him.
If we lived in Turkey, where President Erdogan weaves tales about journalists as criminals, who are plotting to overthrow his regime; if we lived in Hungary, where Prime Minister Victor Orban of Hungary is creating alternative facts to consolidate his regime; if we lived in Russia, where Putin controls the narrative, these conspiracy theories, where anyone who opposes the leader, is viewed a threat, this would make sense. This is not supposed to happen here.
As disheartening and frankly terrifying as it is to hear the dystopian chorus on the right challenging the rule of law by attacking the F.B.I., I am not surprised by it. They have stood by the Don’s side from the beginning and been his partner in crime in screaming an alternative reality of “fake news,” all the while labeling the mainstream media as ‘fake news.”
On the other hand, the Don, has spent his entire life, subverting and defying the rule of law (whether it was refusing to rent to blacks when he helped run his father’s real estate business, refused to pay workers, ripping off students at Trump University by selling them a bogus bill of goods, to mention a few), so this is a fight he knows well and relishes. Remember, the Don is a pathological liar who will do anything to win. If you love him, you are the greatest; if you don’t, watch out– because he is the dirtiest fighter and there are no rules.
All this time I have had the belief, that if The Don crossed the line and had Robert Mueller fired, that this obvious obstruction of justice would force many Republicans to stand up and scream: No More! That Senators like Lindsey Graham and Marco Rubio, John McCain (I know he is ill but a statement by a surrogate to the press could matter), Jeff Flake, Bob Corker would rise above the partisanship and chose democracy over party. What about Susan Collins, Chuck Grassley, Richard Burr, Mitch McConnell and Lisa Murkowski, who heaped praise on Robert Mueller when he was named Special Counsel? Where are you when America needs you to stand up to this orange hair despot wannabe?
But after the nauseating love fest celebrating the passage of the heinous tax bill, all bets are off. Witnessing the Republican supplicants-many who once thought that The Don was not fit to be president- on their knees, genuflecting and praising him in a ceremony Kim Jung-un would envy, has induced an existential nausea that Jean-Paul Sartre would be proud of.
“I want to thank you, Mr. President. I want to thank you for speaking on behalf of and fighting every day for the forgotten men and women of America. Because of your determination, because of your leadership, the forgotten men and women of America are forgotten no more. And we are making America great again.” “Thank you, Mr. President, and God bless you.” Barf!
Orin Hatch (The Senator who actually said the government didn’t have enough money to fund C.H.I.P. , which allows 9 million children to get health insurance)
“You are one heck of a leader. We’re going to keep fighting and we’re going to make this the greatest presidency that we’ve seen not only in generations, but maybe ever.”
Just writing those words has intensified my nausea to such a degree that I need to run to the nearest toilet bowl. But before I do, let me conclude that ultimately it may fall upon the American people to take it to the streets and make sure democracy prevails.
